Revenge of the Mummy - The Ride (Orlando)Location: Universal Studios Orlando Our thoughts: One of the newest rides at Universal Orlando is the Revenge of the Mummy ride. It replaced the old King Kong ride, and that's a good thing because the first time I rode the King Kong ride, it stopped in the middle of the ride and took a while to get started again. We've heard that others have had this problem. The Mummy ride is based on the two Mummy movies starring Brendan Fraser. The idea is that you're a visitor on the set of the third Mummy movie, and strange things have been happening on set. As you wait on line, you get to watch video clips and walk through the "set" of the movie. Eventually you get to the ride, and enter the roller coaster-type car, which feels like you're riding one of those mining cars (no shoulder harness, just a bar that keeps you in your seat). The ride then starts out like one of those tame rides at Disney World, where you ride along on a track and view different animatronic scenes. Eventually you tick off the mummy, who decides to steal your soul. That's when the fun begins, and suddenly you get thrown into a darkened, indoor roller coaster with lots of special effects, twists and turns. There are no loops on the roller coaster part (hence no need for the shoulder restraints), but there are enough drops and curves to satisfy the roller coaster fan. The ride even goes backward at one point, which was pretty fun. The ride time is shorter than we'd like, but overall it was a fun ride. Try to ride it early in the day, as this is a popular ride and the line will get long by mid-morning. Get a fast pass if possible, since we couldn't find a single-rider line (can't remember if they had one for this ride or not). Tip: Keep your head back, pressed firmly into the too-small headrest, to avoid spraining your neck on the sharp turns.
