The Late Show with David Letterman (New York City)Location: Ed Sullivan Theatre, 1697 Broadway Our thoughts: One of the coolest things you can do in New York is attend a taping of The Late Show. One of hardest things to do is get a free or cheap ticket at the last minute. If you're planning a trip to NYC, write in for tickets 3-6 months in advance of your visit, and you may luck out. If you get a voucher in the mail, it doesn't guarantee you a ticket. Voucher holders have to show up a couple hours before the taping and wait in line around the block to get your ticket. We showed up early and got the third and fourth tickets in line, but we still weren't the first ones seated because they were seating single men in the front rows so that they could cheer loudly for Cameron Diaz (one of the guests that night). Once you get in the theatre, the show staff seats you as walk in, so where you sit isn't up to you. But despite the long line times (about 2 hours total) and random seat assignment, it's a fun take and interesting to see how the show is made in real life. Tip: Dave's not joking - the theatre is really cold. Bundle up.
