Best Western President Hotel (New York City)Location: 234 W 48th St., New York Our thoughts: After spending lots of money on hotels in the Times Square area, a colleague told us about the Best Western President Hotel, which is located in Midtown (closer to 8th Avenue than to Broadway) but still close enough to Times Square and the Theater District. You will still end up paying between $100 and $200 a night there (possibly more over weekends), but this is less expensive than some of the other hotels in the area. The rooms are smaller, too, you will be lucky if you can find any walking room other than the bed, TV armoire and very tiny closet. The bathroom is also very small, so claustrophobics beware. But we figure that if you are in New York you won't want to spend too much time in the hotel room anyway, so the size of the rooms didn't bother us too much. We also noticed that they don't have high-speed Interweb access, so you're out of luck if you are there on business and need a fast connection for e-mail. For some reason, the hallways are overheated, but the temperature in the rooms themselves are actually quite comfortable (except the one time when the air conditioner / heater was broken and there were no other rooms left). Check-in time is 3 p.m., and we've never been able to get into our room early, so we've had to leave our bags with the bellman and wander around the city until later in the afternoon. That wasn't a problem, but it's something that you should be aware of. Overall this is a decent hotel, and a good value if you want to spend some extra time in New York and save some money on hotels in the process. Tip: Grab a newspaper each day near the front desk -- they're free!
