L'Allegria Ristorante & Trattoria Italiana (New York City)

More New York City Restaurants

Location: 623 Ninth Ave. (corner of 44th and 9th)

Our thoughts:

If you're in New York City and want to avoid a touristy restaurant, check out L'Allegria. The restaurant has a great location (corner of 44th St. and 9th Ave.), close enough to the Theater District so you can walk to your show after dinner. We've been there about three times, and have never needed a reservation (although the last time they asked us and we were worried that we would have to wait). The restaurant is cozy, with about 20 tables and a bar area (they can seat about 75 people). When I find a dish that I like I stick with it, so I've only had the following items: Caesar Salad (very good) and an extremely excellent Fettucini Alfredo that is made with fresh pasta. Servings are big -- we've always been full and have never tried any of the desserts. Luckily we were always able to walk off our meal a bit. Prices are good -- not terribly expensive, especially for New York City. Service has always been good, friendly and meals come a lot quicker than you would expect.

Tip: Traffic on 9th Avenue around dinnertime stinks, so try to walk there instead of driving or cabbing it.
