Our thoughts: Venice Beach is probably the best place to people watch in Southern California. The boardwalk is bordered by eclectic clothing, food and smoke shops on one side and a bevy of street performers, palm readers, artisans and propagandists on the other.

Take your time and enjoy the menagerie of ideas, people and sights before you. Stay alert as there are many skateboarders, bicycles, rollerbladers, kids and dogs. Beyond the boardwalk is the beach and the Pacific, and at one end of the walk you'll find the famous Muscle Beach, where muscle-builders pump iron.

Tip: On weekends, parking is a pain. Park away from the beach — you'll pay less and you won't have to wait in line to get a spot. Avoid Speedway, it's narrow and slow and parking is scarce.
