Our thoughts: Book Soup is LA's most famous bookstore and the place where the cool kids go to buy books in Hollywood. No Borders or Barnes & Noble for that set. In the days of large chain store, it's refreshing to see a decent independent store like Book Soup.

This store has plenty of stock, including many movie and Hollywood titles, but if you need help, be prepared to find the staff, who are content to let you wander and leave you alone. The layout isn't exactly precise or intuitive, so be prepared to hunt for what you need. The store does offer a large newsstand and a good selection of maps if you're in the market.

If you happen to be in the area and need something, stop by. Otherwise, it's not worth a special trip fighting LA traffic.

Tip: Don't try to be an ironic hipster and ask the cashier if they have any books by John Grisham.
