Luxor (Las Vegas)Location: 3900 Las Vegas Blvd. So. Our thoughts: The Luxor is an Egyptian-themed casino and hotel that is built like a giant pyramid, which makes it pretty easy to spot on the Las Vegas strip (especially at night just look up for the giant beam of light that shoots into space). The hotel rooms are actually built inside the pyramid on each side, each level having fewer rooms as you build your way towards the top. You can also stay in a room at an adjoining tower, which looks like a normal hotel. Pick the pyramid room if you can, since they are a bit cooler. But first you have to get to the room. Instead of elevators, the Luxor uses an "inclinator," which is basically an elevator that goes up in a diagonal line. Stepping inside the inclinator, it felt like I was moving sideways more than up and down. After reaching my floor, I actually asked the room-service guy who was in the inclinator with me whether we had actually gone up. (He looked at me like I was the 10,000th person who had asked him that.) Once inside the room, it's a normal hotel room, except for the window, which angles downward (remember, the room is built on the side of a pyramid). Both times I've stayed at the Luxor the hotel rooms have been fine, but a co-worker who recently went said that her TV didn't work, some of the wallpaper was peeling and there might have been a small leak inside the room. My hotel room had Interweb access, which was good for the business trip I was on ($10.99 per 24-hour period). Hotel room costs were about mid-tier between $100 and $200 per night, depending on the month and day of week. (Weekends are always more expensive.) The casino itself is located on the base level of the pyramid, and seems to be relatively busy most of the time. It's probably not hard to find a $5 minimum table, except for the busy times (after 9 p.m. and on the weekends). The Luxor also has other attractions too, including several restaurants (the Steakhouse is pretty good), the Ra nightclub (if you believe the ads, you will find young women making out with ceach other) and an IMAX theater. The food court and other more kid-friendly attractions (the theater, motion rides, arcade, etc.) are located on the second level of the casino. Tip: The Luxor is also the middle hotel connecting to the Mandalay Bay Hotel and the Excalibur via walkway, so if you wanted to check those out you could get there without having to go outside.
