Golden Nugget (Las Vegas)

More Las Vegas Hotels

Location: 129 E. Fremont St.

Our thoughts: With its Downtown Las Vegas location, the Golden Nugget is a good mid-tier hotel for those who don't mind staying off-Strip. Rates were excellent (around $80/night for our stay) and the rooms were large and clean.

The Nugget is an old hotel in years (though not appearance) so it doesn't sport the attractions or shopping of its newer colleagues on the Strip. However, for most travelers, the Nugget's combination of casino, shows and restaurants will do just fine.

The casino opens up onto the famous Fremont Street Experience, which offers light shows, shopping and a whole bunch of other casinos within walking distance. It's a fun take, and it's nice to be able to enjoy the sights, cheap table minimums and light show, then simply walk back to your room.

We were a little concerned about staying in the Fremont Street area, given that when you move a block or two off the street the area is sketchy, to put it mildly. However, security was abundant around the hotel and its environs, and we never worried (just don't stray too far off Fremont).

Tip: Walk over to the Mermaids Casino for the deep-fried Oreos.
