Mesa Grill at Caesar's Palace (Las Vegas)Location: Caesar's Palace near the sports book Our thoughts: The Mesa Grill is located inside the Caesar's Palace Casino, smack dab in the middle right near the sports book. We say middle because you can basically walk around the restaruant in a circle (there's a separate restaurant/bar area attached but basically you can get there in serveral directions). Luckily for the patrons, the restaurant is walled off with glass walls, so while you can see some of the casino action going on, you won't hear it. The staff told us a few times that this was chef "Bobby Flay's first restaurant outside of New York," they seemed especially proud of this fact. You can walk by an open kitchen area and see the chefs cooking on the grills and other equipment. Menu items are what you'd expect to see at a fancy restaurant, with several different appetizer choices reflecting not so much a theme as much as the fact that Bobby Flay really likes spices. For example, our Romaine Salad (the closest thing we could get to a Caesar Salad) had lots of pepper in the salad, and it was the first times that my eyes watered when eating a Caesar Salad. (I suppose I should get bonus points for eating a Caesar Salad in Caesar's Palace, but nobody from the hotel or restaurant congratulated me on this feat). We chose to eat one of the two "signature" dishes, the New York Strip Steak (the other signature dish is a pork tenderloin). Big mistake. New York Strip steaks are generally fatty, and the piece that we received had so much fat in it that we carved up half our steak looking for pieces that weren't fatty. It came with a double-baked potato with creme fraiche and onions that wasn't very good as well. As we expected, the steak also had lots of spices on it, so we headed for the water glass again. This wasn't our favorite steak house, we prefer much better food at a more basic restaurant. Still, if you're a big fan of Bobby Flay and his penchant for spices, then you will probably like this more than I did. Tip: Drink lots of water.
