Volcano at the Mirage (Las Vegas)Location: Outside the Mirage Hotel on Las Vegas Boulevard. Our thoughts: Maybe I'm just jaded from all the special effects and stunt shows that I've seen in my life, but when you come up to me and say, "Hey, there's a real-life volcano that erupts outside the Mirage every 15 minutes at night," I expect to see something pretty cool. The shows go on from 7 p.m. to midnight every 15 minutes, so if you miss one you can wait for the next one without too much hassle. The Mirage Web site promises flames that "shoot into the night sky spewing smoke and fire 100 feet above the waters below, transforming a tranquil waterfall into spectacular streams of molten lava." Unfortunately, they have a good copy writer. Yes, there is fire, but it looks relatively calm from where you're standing (you can feel the heat, though, nice on a cool night). And there's no molten lava, just more fire that seems to "float" on the water. The red "lava" is also a lighting effect. Tip: If you're in a 'free show' mood, hit this, the pirate show and the Siegfried and Roy Statue within a small stretch of the Strip.
