Ali'i Drive Shopping (Hawaii's Big Island)

More Hawaii's Big Island Shopping

Location: Ali'i Drive, Kailua-Kona

Our thoughts: Kailua-Kona is perhaps the most touristy part of the west coast (and perhaps the whole Island), and the most touristy part of Kailua-Kona is Ali'i Drive. If you're looking for nightlife, this is it - bars, restaurants and shops.

We liked this area because we could park at one end and walk Ali'i Drive, enjoying its unique shops. If you need sandals, a big straw hat, jewlrey, T-shirts or a sarong, this is the place to be. Aside from the stand-alone shops on the drive, it also boasts some small shopping centers you should hit, such as Kona Inn Shopping Village, Ali'i Gardens Marketplace and Coconut Grove Marketplace. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants in the area if you want to grab a meal or a drink. If you are staying on the west coast of Hawaii up in the Waikoloa area, you should come down here (about a 30-minute drive) and avoid the higher costs of the resort area shopping areas.

Tip: If you need something basic, such as sunscreen, towels or other sundries, save your money and hit the area Wal-Mart or K-Mart.
