St. Benedict's Painted Church (Hawaii's Big Island)

More Hawaii's Big Island Activities

Location: Highway 160, Honaunau, West Kona Coast

Our thoughts: This small Catholic church became "the painted church" after Fr. John Velge decorated its interior between 1899-1904 to communicate Bible stories to non-English-speaking Hawaiians.

The church is beautiful and quaint, and a departure from many you may have seen. Definitely worth the trip, plus it's a quiet place to escape the sun. Watch out for the giant bugs, though.

Tip: Buy something at the modest gift shop to support the preservation of the building.
