'Anaeho'omalu Bay (Hawaii's Big Island)

More Hawaii's Big Island Activities

Location: Off Waikoloa Road, Waikoloa

Our thoughts: It's not nearly as nice as Hapuna Beach State Park, but it's a beach and it's in Hawaii, so it automatically gets an 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. "A Bay" (see tip below) features coarse "salt and pepper" sand - not the soft, white sand beaches you associate with Hawaii. The bay floor is rather rocky, and the day we were there the beach was filled with locals and lots of wind and body surfers (it was a holiday), so water and land space got tight quick.

Overall, it's a Hawaiian beach, so there are worse places you can be. Yet we recommend you drive 15 minutes north and spend your time at Hapuna Beach.

Tip: Just call it "A Bay." The locals will know what you mean and you don't have to try to pronounce 'Anaeho'omalu.
