Waipi'o Valley Lookout (Hawaii's Big Island)

More Hawaii's Big Island Activities

Location: At the end of Highway 240, Honokaa, North Kohala Coast

Our thoughts: It's hard to take a bad photo at the lookout, 900 feet above the Waipi'o Valley. From that perch you can spy black sand beaches, stunning ocean cliffs and a whole lotta Pacific. If you're on the way to Hilo, definitely stop.

From the parking area you can take some good photos, or you can do a small hike down a path (it's not too steep) and get a better view (there are some bathrooms and picnic tables there too). If there are a lot of people there you might have a hard time parking, but once you take the photos there's not much else to do (unless you brought a picnic basket).

Tip: Stop at the designated lookout spot. Don't try to drive down to the valley or you'll drop your transmission halfway down the steep access road. In fact, if you have a rental car you're not supposed to go down that road.
