Akaka Falls State Park (Hawaii's Big Island)

More Hawaii's Big Island Activities

Location: Akaka Falls Road, Route 220

Our thoughts: Akaka Falls State Park is off the beaten path, though if you're on your way to Hilo it's kinda on the way. Once you get to the falls you can take two paths. There will be a sign that gives you the choice of which falls to visit first. The path then circles around to the other falls, so you don't have to backtrack.

If it's hot, skip the Kahuna Falls and head straight to Akaka, which drops 420 feet. It was quite a sight and the hike through the rain forest is kinda long on a really hot day, leading to a "That's all?" feeling once you get there. But, then again, we were crazy hot and tired when we did this, so that may not be the most objective opinion.

Tip: Has the most disgusting bathroom facilities we've ever seen. Avoid at all costs.
