Hapuna Beach State Park (Hawaii's Big Island)

More Hawaii's Big Island Activities

Location: North Kohala Coast

Our thoughts: We wish we had "state parks" like this at home. Hapuna Beach is the largest white sand beach on the island and is utterly gorgeous.

The body surfing's pretty decent (especially when the wind picks up) and when we went on weekday mornings it wasn't crowded. A snack bar at the park entrance offers standard fare and all-important chair and umbrella rentals. There's little shade at the beach, so do yourself a favor and spend $10 for two chairs and an umbrella, and enjoy your day. If it gets too windy, find yourself a shady area near the trees in the back.

Tip: Rent an umbrella and chair at the park office to give yourself a break from the sun.
