Taco Bell/KFC

More Boston Restaurants

Location: corner of Mass Ave and Walden Street, North Cambridge

Our thoughts: This was one of many Mexican restaurants in the Porter Square/Harvard Square/Davis Square area, with an array of competitors that includes the Forest Cafe, The Border Cafe, Boca Grande, Tacos Lupita, Qdoba Mexican Grill, Chipotle, Picante, Jose's Mexican Restaurant and Anna's Taqueria. This was also probably the most affordable one. Unfortunately, they've gone out of business, reducing the number of Mexican choices by one. There have been some signs up indicating that this would reopen as Banjo's Restaurant (which has an existing location in Weymouth), but after some initial work, construction seems to be at a standstill.

As for the previous Taco Bell, if you were arriving by car, the cramped parking lot could be very tricky. If you were heading westbound on Mass Ave, you had to turn left onto Walden Street, and then left into the parking lot. Walden gets very congested approaching the Mass Ave light, and unfortunately, many drivers ignore the "Do Not Block Driveway" sign. If you're coming eastbound on Mass Ave, best bet would have been to go past Walden Street and pull into the driveway from Mass Ave. Definitely consider public transportation, as there's a bus stop right in front of the restaurant, and the Porter Red Line station is about five minutes' walk.

The menu included tacos, burritos, nachos, chulapas, gorditas and tostadas. Plus, you could order anything on the KFC menu. Sometimes I liked to mix it up and dip the Taco Bell entrees into the KFC sauces.

The service here was very slow sometimes. Once night we came here for a late-night order of tacos. We were the only customers in the store when we arrived, and we were still the only ones there when the food was ready about 20 minutes later. The fun part was that after all that wait in the empty restaurant, they didn't just hand us the food, but instead put it on the counter and yelled "Number 21!"

Tip: Try ordering something from both restaurants (like Nachos and popcorn chicken) for a flavor treat. Then you won't be disappointed that you didn't have something from the other restaurant.
