Fenway Park

More Boston Sports

Location: outside Kenmore Square

Our thoughts: While many other teams have torn down their stadiums and built modern, faux-old-fashioned ballparks, the Red Sox still have the real old-fashioned thing. Lately, the Red Sox have taken to marketing Fenway as "America's Most Beloved Ballpark." It's a good thing that it's so beloved — if it weren't, people probably wouldn't put up with cramped seats, narrow aisles, packed concourses, long bathroom lines, obstructed views and sky-high ticket prices.

Depending on where you're sitting, Fenway may not be the most comfortable place to watch a game. But no stadium beats Fenway when it comes to atmosphere.

In recent years, the team has been easing some of Fenway's problems. Since the team was sold by the Yawkey estate to the Werner/Lucchino/Henry group in 2003, the Red Sox have added several nice enhancements to the park:

  • Two extra rows of "front row" seats were added around the infield (at super-premium prices). Also, assorted other seats were inserted around the park anywhere else they could fit them.
  • The screens that used to catch home runs atop the Green Monster were removed to make way for three rows of Monster Seats, plus one row of Monster standing room.
  • A new bar and seating area (with five seats surrounding each home plate-shaped table) was added on the the Right Field Roof.
  • Within the park, a new concession area were added at the Big Concourse (in right field, behind the grandstand), plus a smaller one on the third base side.
  • The team also cut a deal with the city to close Yawkey Way before and during games, making the street itself within the admission area of the park, and adding addition concessions on the street (including Remdawg's).

In 2005, the Red Sox announced that they'll be staying at Fenway for the forseeable future, with further renovations planned.

Tip: Take the T to Fenway. Don't even try to park anywhere nearby, as the parking lots are a big ripoff, and throngs of pedestrian fans make it tough to drive. Save a few bucks by picking up some food from one of the sausage vendors outside the park.
