There's a paved path almost all the way around the pond (except for one section with a sand surface). For the adventurous, there are several places where you can leave the pavement for some more challenging dirt paths. Lots of runners do laps of the pond as a workout. Every Saturday at 10 am, the North Medford Club sponsors a free 2.5-mile or 5-mile race around the pond. Dog owners seem to particularly love Fresh Pond, as it's a real gathering place for dogs. Regardless of whether you're walking, running, biking or doing anything else, you're likely to pass a lot of dogs, so keep your eyes open. Tip: The Cambridge Water Department has an exhibit with all sorts of educational materials about water and nature inside the visitors center in the Water Works building. (Plus, there are public bathrooms in there.)
