Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Mini Crullers Original Glazed

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Mini Crullers Original Glazed

Taste test: Longtime fans of Taquitos.net may know that we're somewhat obsessed with Krispy Kreme. Unfortunately, Krispy Kreme stores failed spectacularly in our home area, so fresh doughnuts are now a rare treat while traveling. But this packaged version offered hope. Could it duplicate the experience of "Hot Doughnuts Now"?

During the unboxing, things did not bode well, as the box contained one big white plastic bag, which in turn contained all of the crullers together, with no individual wrappers. This didn't seem like a constructive way to prevent them from sticking together, nor keeping them fresh on the remote chance that I didn't eat them all at once.

But as for the sticking together part — surprise! — the packaging was actually just fine. The donuts didn't stick together at all, nor were they mushed.

An even bigger surprise was the texture of the crullers. They didn't look like the Krispy Kreme Original Glazed because of the cruller shapes, and they were smaller at about 2-3/4 inches in diameter, but they sure felt and tasted like them. They were very soft and super light, with a thin sugar coating, about as close in texture to the Krispy Kreme's off-the-machine Hot Original as I could reasonably expect.

After eating four of them straight from the bag, I decided, just for the heck of it, to try microwaving one. After some experimentation (if you cook it too long, the sugar coating will burn your fingertips), I found that 7 seconds in the microwave brought things even closer to the in-store experience. They didn't reproduce the fresh doughnut experience quite 100%, but they came far closer than I thought they possibly could. So good!

Smell test: Nice, pretty similar to an off-the-conveyor Krispy Kreme.

From the package: “Since 1937, we've been using only the highest quality ingredients to craft premium sweet treats that generations have grown to love.” ... “Great for sharing”
