Taste test: As surprising as it was that this product existed, figuring out what the combination of these two well know brands actually entailed was quite confusing as well.

The most obvious interpretation (and my initial assumption) was that they mixed together Smartfood white cheddar popcorn with the cereal berries. But after reading everything on the bag and taking a peek inside, it turned out to be not quite that. The popcorn, though showing just the typical Smartfood off-white color, was berry-flavored, while also containing cheese. (I learned this not just from reading the expansive marketing copy, which did hint at it, but by reading the Ingredients, which was actually separate lists for the cereal and popcorn, labeling the popcorn section as "Mixed Berry Flavored Popcorn.")

The Crunch Berries made up a minority of bag's contents, particularly near the top, and they came in four colors — red, teal blue, purple and green. I purposely tried just the popcorn initially, to verify the berry flavor without bringing actual Crunch Berries into the mix. It did indeed have some sweet berry flavoring, not super strong, but strong enough that I couldn't really taste the cheese. The Crunch Berries had a strong berry flavor and good crunch, tasting just like the cereal.

If you really like Crunch Berries, I suppose there's an argument for using berry-flavored popcorn, but I think it would have been more appealing to use regular cheddar popcorn, for a real contrast between the two elements, rather than just being an all-sweet mix.

The result here was kind of a watered-down version of Cap'n Crunch's Crunch Berries. Those could make a snack on their own, as could the regular Cap'n Crunch cereal, so this snack bag didn't do much to excite me. Meh.

Smell test: Definitely smells like the berries in the cereal, fairly strong, and hard to notice any popcorn smell amid that.

From the package: “Naturally and artificially flavored popcorn and cereal mix” ... “Clearly the products have been in large to show texture” ... “Limited time flavor” ... “Berry popcorn meats Cap'n Crunch's is Crunch Berries®. Mind. Blown.” ... “Cap'n Crunch's Crunch Berries is a registered trademark of The Quaker Oats Company” ... “Air-popped popcorn tossed in sweet berry goodness, combined with real Cap'n Crunch's Crunch Berries®. The perfect crunchy-sweet snack — so berry tasty.”
