Taste test: This bag contained mostly large, roundish kernels with a dark coating on most of the surfaces (but certainly the entire surface like the ones pictured on the front of the bag). It seemed a single coating of a hybrid chocolate/caramel, not separate coatings of chocolate over caramel. Most of the pieces were individual kernels, but there were some small stuck-together clusters.
We crunched in to find a nice crunch and great crispness. The feel that ranged from mildly crunchy to very crunchy, and the popcorn underneath the coating was perfectly crisp and melt-in-you-mouth soft. The flavor did indeed fall somewhere between chocolate and caramel, without closely resembling either. It definitely didn't taste like normal caramel corn, but there was a caramelness in the flavor, and yet it didn't taste like normal chocolate either. Pretty good, but if you're craving either caramel or chocolate, it's different enough that it might not satisfy either craving. Unlike regular Cracker Jacks, this was just popcorn, no peanuts, though the marketing copy on the back of the bag was borderline misleading regarding peanuts in the way they compared these to Original Cracker Jacks.
Smell test: Mild chocolate smell. Noticed the caramel too on the second whiff.
From the package: “Popped corn enlarged to show texture” ... “You loved Cracker Jack® brand as a kid! Now this American favorite comes in Original ... and Chocolate & Caramel flavor! There's always a prize inside! So open a bag — you'll feel like a kid again!”
