Gluten Free Oreo

Gluten Free Oreo

Buy Oreos on Amazon #ad

Taste test: As the number of Oreo varieties has ballooned in recent years, they've tinkered with just about every aspect of the Oreo — from diameter to thickness to amount of creme to flavor of the cookies and creme to not really being a sandwich to three cookies and two layers of filling to themed shapes and many more. But the one constant has been that the cookie was made with wheat flour. Until now.

What did they replace the wheat with? Pretty much everything, it seems, as the Ingredients included White Rice Flour, Tapioca Starch, Whole Oat Flour and Cornstarch.

I opened up the package to find that they looked generally like regular Oreos, but there were changes to the cookie faces, incorporating the word "GLUTEN" above the OREO name and "FREE" below it. They also added six small holes to each cookie face, three running from about 3 o'clock to 5 o'clock and another three from about 7 to 9. I pulled off a cookie face and held it up to the light, finding that the holes didn't go fully through, but nearly so, as some light was faintly showing through.

I poured some milk and crunched in to find that the taste and texture were pretty much indistinguishable from gluten-rich Oreos, a great combination of chocolate and creme. If I hadn't known that these were Gluten Free Oreos, I would never have noticed the difference. Whatever it was that they did with those four grains, it really worked to simulate the missing wheat flour. I did notice some slight saltiness in my mouth afterward, but it didn't detract from the Oreo experience. They got this one right.
