Taste test: These tortilla chips broke some new ground on the branding front, as they we're calling them semi-store brand chips, with Market Basket's name on the bag, but also the Herr's brand represented. It's not a huge secret that many store-brand chips are made in the same factories as the name-brand chips, but which company actually makes any given one is usually kept quite secret. With this bag, Herr's was willing to lift the facade, and they seemed to have positioned it as a special recipe, different from what Herr's sells under its own label.
The quarter-circle tortilla chips had generally a golden yellow color, with many darker and lighter spots and a pattern of black marks on one side of most chips. They looked really nice. We crunched in to find that they had a good crispness, nice crunch, and good strength for holding dip. Even without a dip, the chips were quite tasty, far more than your typical tortilla chips. When I saw "lightly seasoned" on the bag, I assumed it referred just to the amount of salt, but these were lightly seasoned with a bit more than that. They didn't load on the spices to the degree that Doritos does, but it was enough seasoning to be noticed. The result was very good, with a great corn taste enhanced by the mild spices, and an excellent texture. A great tortilla chip, with or without dip!
Smell test: Slightly zesty corn smell. Nice.
