Taste test: Talk about hype — this bag promised to deliver some serious heat onto the Paqui tortilla chips, pumping up the heat with at least four strong descriptions. The tortilla chips had the same large quarter-circle shapes the other (less hot) Paqui flavors, with surface textures that looked a lot like Doritos, plus some tiny bits of dark seasoning.
We crunched in to find that there was a good kick of heat initially, and then it got quite a bit hotter in the aftertaste as the heat moved its way down the upper digestive tract. As for taste, there wasn't much to speak of beyond the heat. Compared against Trader's Joe's Ghost Pepper Potato Chips, there really was no comparison — the Paqui were far, far hotter. And compared against Paqui's own "One Chip Challenge" Carolina Reaper Pepper chips, there was again no comparison — Haunted Ghost Pepper was very hot, but Carolina Reaper Pepper took it to a whole new level.
Smell test: Can smell some peppers, not a bad smell, but not an enticing one either. Not hot or anything, didn't make my mouth water.
From the package: “Homemade Horror®” ... “Scary Heat” ... “Freakin' Hot” ... “Fresh from Austin, Texas” ... “Witness the Haunted Ghost Pepper, the scariest of them all. It's sure to terrify your taste buds.” ... “Warning: The contents of this bag are extremely frightening. Paqui is not responsible for any injuries as a result from ingesting this delicious terror. The use of gloves and safety goggles is encouraged. Common side effects include addiction to burning pain, blurred vision, and unquenchable thirst."a
