Taste test: This new flavor of Funyuns was quite an important discovery, because we don't come across new Funyuns flavors every day, or even every year. For Frito-Lay's other major brands, new flavors are a bit more routine — we've reviewed more than 100 kinds of Doritos and 70+ Cheetos — but Funyuns had to this point been limited to just original, Flamin' Hot and wasabi.
After opening the bag, we saw that the rings had lots of dark red seasoning on them, for an appearance very closely matching the picture on the bag. The surfaces looked very similar to spicy pork rinds, except obviously with ring shapes. We crunched in to find that the initial taste was a lot like regular Funyuns, with their excellent blend of mild onion and potato. That was surprising, as the dark appearance made us expect lots of spices, and we were worried that the chile and lime would entirely overwhelm the Funyuns taste. The chile and lime flavor did arrive in earnest in the aftertaste, more chile than lime, with a middling kick of heat. It was a fairly standard chile and lime flavor, so nothing really special here, but keeping the initial Funyuns taste was a big plus. Pretty good.
Smell test: Mild chile and lime smell.
