Taste test: We've reviewed a whole lot of potato chips (more than 1700 kinds), and if you've kept up on our reviews, you know that we're in the game to find the best taste and texture, but we're also pretty vocally disappointed when any chip bag, even when filled with tasty chips, skimps with a largely empty bag. We've heard all of the common excuses — sold by weight, not volume; pumped full of air to prevent chip breakage — but we reject them. We've seen bags with few broken chips and bags with mostly broken chips, and there's no strong correlation to how full the bag is. The breakage has more to do with how the chips are manufactured and how the bags are handled. With the recent trend of keeping the same bag size while reducing the product weight, it's clear that it's not being done with the consumer in mind.
The folks behind this one definitely get that, as they've taken the same size bag that typically holds 1/2 to 1 oz. of potato chips and loaded up with 2.25 oz. We opened the bag to find that it was indeed full of chips! The somewhat wiggly potato chips had lots of small bubbles embedded inside and generally a light yellow color, plus some areas that were more golden. The chips were on the small side of the spectrum, with some broken ones, but mostly just small unbroken ones. They had a light crunch with very good crispness and a good potato taste, moderately salty, similar to many other kettle-cooked chips.
Even after eating a lot of chips, there were plenty left in the bag, which was rated to be 2.5 servings (or 16 chips per serving). By that math, there should have been 40 chips in the bag; we didn't do a precise count, but there were a lot more than 40 chips in the bag.
Smell test: Strong potato smell, similar to Cape Cod and other kettle-cooked chips.
From the package: “I'm full. Feel for yourself” ... “I have been eating potato chips my entire life and have always felt disappointment after opening the bag. Every bag puffed full of air with only a small amount of chips. I decided to change this. I set out on a journey to discover the best combination of ingredients, and after a lot of hard work and perseverance, I can say that we are truly able to make the highest quality chips and we are stuffing as many chips into each bag as we can.” ... “Ingredients: Potatoes, Soybean Oil, Salt Added.”
