Utz Pourables Mini Cheddar Cheese Balls
Taste test: This bag of cheese balls looked like it was intended to take on Cheetos Flamin' Hot Flavor Shots, offering miniature cheese balls in a small, narrow bag. These didn't attempt the bring the heat like those Cheetos, but that wasn't the only difference. This bag was taller and, more significantly, wider (more on this below) than the Cheetos — offering 40% more cheese balls by weight.
The cheese balls varied a bit in size, but they were all pretty small, within range of the Cheetos ones. They had a light, crisp feel and lots of great cheddar flavor — at least the ones that landed in my mouth (more on this below too).
The "Pourables" name, combined with the marketing copy on the back of the bag, made it clear that the intention of the packaging was to facilitate pouring the cheese balls poured directly into your mouth. I'll make one thing clear: When I tried to do this, I ended up repeatedly spilling cheese balls onto the floor, with more cheese balls missing my mouth than from all other cheese puff bags I've eaten combined. There may have been other factors at work, but the main issue seemed to be that the top of the bag had a bigger opening than the Cheetos Flavor Shots did, and apparently it was enough bigger than my mouth to really mess up pouring the balls. After discovering the problem, I was super careful in how I held the bag to narrow it and aim the cheese balls, and even then, some of them missed my mouth.
Normally I'd be the last person to argue against making any cheese puff bag bigger, but in this case, it kind of defeated the purpose of the special packaging.
