First, there's a moderately long escalator ride to get to the fare booths and turnstyles area. Then, a 12-story escalator to get to the Inbound platform. (It's the only escalator in Boston that approaches the length of the impressive ones in London's Underground.) Plus, if you're headed Outbound to Alewife, you need to go down yet another short escalator. If you like to exercise, walking all the way up from the Outbound platform is a very good stairs workout. Porter Square has some good inexpensive restaurants, including Wok N Roll, Boca Grande and Anna's Taqueria. Tip: If you plan to travel to Harvard Square, it's cheaper and won't take much longer to just walk there.
