Excalibur Las Vegas Resort Hotel and Casino (Las Vegas)

More Las Vegas Hotels

Location: 3850 Las Vegas Boulvard South

Our thoughts: If you're into King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, you might want to stay at this hotel in Las Vegas, which promises all of those trappings and more. If you're there on a business trip and want amenities such as high-speed Interweb service, you will want to look elsewhere.

I would classify this hotel in the third tier of hotels: First tier being expensive hotels like the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Venetian, Caesar's Palace and Paris, and second tier including hotels such as Treasure Island, the Mirage, MGM Grand and even New York-New York. The third tier, including the Excalibur, are hotels that are aimed more at the tourist rather than the businessman. When we stayed there, we had an old-fashioned telephone that didn't have a data port, and when we tried to dial out, we were lucky if we got a 28.8Kbps connection. In fact, the housekeeper seemed very impressed with a $5 tip, leaving us extra towels and a nice thank-you note.

However, if you go there on vacation and are into the whole Middle Ages concept, this can be a fun place to visit. The hotel includes different attractions, such as the Tournament of Kings (jousting dinner show), Thunder from Down Under (male stripper show), a Court Jester's Stage (comedy and magic for the kids), and the Fantasy Faire Midway (carnival and arcade games downstairs). The casino itself has lots of slot machines, and table games where you can find $5 minimums regularly (especially cool since a lot of other casinos jump to $10 minimums rather quickly at night).

Most of the attractions are on the second level, including a decent food court that includes fast-food staples, a buffet, a decent Italian restaurant and a steakhouse. The highlights of the food court are the Krispy Kreme doughnuts store, in which you can see the doughnuts being made, and the Cold Stone Creamery ice cream stand, in which you can create your own ice cream concoction by mixing in toppings to the ice cream.

Tip: Get your photo taken next to the giant purple dragon near the lobby.
