Harrah's Las Vegas (Las Vegas)

More Las Vegas Hotels

Location: 3475 Las Vegas Blvd South

Our thoughts: Located in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip (right near Mirage, Venice, Treasure Island), Harrah's Las Vegas often gets overlooked because of the larger super-casinos nearby. The hotel is located across from the Mirage and Caesar's, next to the Imperial Palace and other smaller, less reputable casinos.

The theme seems to be a mixture of Mardi Gras and Carnevale, so there's always a party atmosphere whenever you walk through or around the casino. Lots of slot machines to play here, and the table games always seem to be crowded full of people. The fun theme carries over into some of the bars, including a piano bar that features dueling piano players and the Carnival Court, a small shopping area where they sometimes have live bands and people singing and dancing.

The Sports Book is worth visiting, too, if only for the sports bar that is located inside the sports book area. The place has lousy service, and often you find yourself fighting the regular sports gamblers trying to find a table, but the food was really good there. Sports pub food like steak sandwiches, burgers, chicken fingers and popcorn shrimp make this one of my favorite eateries. It's too bad they couldn't make a separate seating area just for people eating.

The hotel room I stayed in had lots of orange decorations -- the bedspread, curtains and floor were all orange. Maybe they've updated this since I stayed, but if you don't like the color orange, beware. The times I stayed here I was able to get a room for under $100 a night, but it's likely those prices have gone up in recent years.

Two other things worth mentioning -- head to the Ghiradelli ice cream shop in the Carnival Court for the best sundae you've ever had; and Harrah's is a stop on the monorail, so you can quickly get to other Vegas locations for only $3 a trip.

Tip: Check out the Party Pit for somewhat-low table game action.
