Mirage Hotel and Casino (Las Vegas)Location: 3400 S. Las Vegas Blvd. Our thoughts: The Mirage was one of the first big "super-casinos" that were developed on the Las Vegas strip, yet it doesn't really have a theme or identity like some of the other, newer hotels and casinos. For example, Treasure Island has the pirate thing, Caesar's has the whole ancient Rome motif, and even Harrah's has a Mardis Gras atmosphere. Mirage just has this "desert" thing going, as if this is a place in the middle of the desert where you want to have your thirst (or needs) quenched. The inside of the hotel is nice, if generic. There are lush jungle areas, lots of green areas and upscale elegance design. I think it's trying to be like the Bellagio, but for people who can't afford to stay at the Bellagio. The rooms themselves are nice, service was good, if unmemorable. Maybe that's what a hotel room is supposed to be -- unmemorable. The hotel has a variety of restaurants, a sports book, the free Volcano show outside, and the over-rated Danny Gans show. They used to have Siegfried & Roy here, but then Roy got mauled by a tiger. The types of people I've seen at this hotel seem to be older (45+) than crowds at other hotels, but not the super-extravagant and wealthy that you might find at the Venetian, Paris or Bellagio. This is the perfect place for your aunt and uncle from Iowa to stay -- not trashy, not over-the-top, just a nice, generic, safe super-casino and hotel.
