Stratosphere Las Vegas (Las Vegas)Location: 2000 Las Vegas Blvd. South Our thoughts: There's a reason why the rooms at the Stratosphere are cheap — they're small (few amenities, no minibar) and not the cleanest in town (we found cigarette burn holes in our window curtains). The Strat is strictly a budget hotel. If you're trying to save money so you can spend it elsewhere in Vegas and don't care about the quality or cleanliness of your room, the Strat is for you. The main reason to visit the Stratosphere is to go to the top of the tower, which looks like the Seattle Space Needle. At the top is an observation deck that offers excellent night-time views of Las Vegas, a revolving restaurant and a thrill-ride area where there are three (soon-to-be four) extremely scary rides outside and 1,100 feet above the ground. The casino itself is pretty typical, nothing too much to write home about. The time we did visit, there were a bunch of signs advertising $2 blackjack, but when we tried to find the tables we couldn't find them. We finally asked a dealer where they were, and she said it was located way in the back (one table that was always full). The Stratosphere is also in a rather sketchy part of the Strip, where Las Veagas meets the less-than-desirable "Scum Vegas", land of quickie-wedding chapels, tattoo parlors and adult entertainment. Tip: Don't walk to the Stratosphere, and let a valet park your car. The neighborhood is sketchy.
