High Rise Bread

More Boston Restaurants

Location: Corner of Concord Ave and Huron Ave, Cambridge

Our thoughts: This is a very expensive sandwich shop, but the sandwiches are really, really, really good, so it just might be worth it. They also sell a selection of wines, and of course a wide array of fresh-baked breads (for those who might prefer to make their own sandwiches). Did I mention that the sandwiches are good?

The numbered sandwich menu is up on a large blackboard behind the counter, with such offerings as Kate's Rough Ride (avacado, tomato, cole slaw, cucumber, lettuce and Russian Dressing on Huron Bread), Sin Sandwich (Nutella and Valrhona dark chocolate, on Brioche Bread, grilled) and Ken's Big Mouth (smoked turkey, Black Forest Ham, Swiss, cole slaw and spicy mustard on rye, grilled).

They've also got salads, wines and soups (haven't tried those yet), plus some excellent special brunch sandwiches on weekends.

High Rise bans cell phones from the restaurant, hoping to keep some peace and sanity. We applaud High Rise for this ban, and we condemn any Cantabridgians who defy the ban. Unfortunately, High Rise also cranks the music so loud that the order-takers can sometimes barely hear you when you order. Even though you can order by number, they still messed up my order once, making the wrong sandwich. (But once they fixed the error, I had two great sandwiches in my hand while paying for just one!)

The eating area has some long communal tables where you can sit and enjoy the food. It invariably takes a while for them to make the sandwiches, but for sandwiches like these, it's worth the wait.

Bread is made in a bakery adjacent to the eating area, so you can watch the dough get mixed and spun by the expert breadmakers.

Tip: High Rise has a second location on Brattle Street.
