Taste: This very entertaining bag described the snack inside as corn puffs coated in butter toffee. That sounded a lot like the spectacular Shearer's Caramel Corn Puffs, which are small corn puffs (like these, without cheese) lightly coated in caramel.
We opened the bag to see smallish, irregularly shaped curls with a nice lightly golden yellow color. They had smoother surfaces than Shearer's version, but it was still a somewhat similar look.
We crunched in to find a fairly soft feel from the butter toffee coating, with a nice mildly sweet taste, mixed in with a bit of corn. The crunch was softer than Shearer's — those weren't hard by any means, nor thickly coated, but the shell was just solid enough to give a satisfying light crunch that easily gave way to the softer corn puff interior. It wasn't quite the same here, as the sugar was still different from the interior, but it didn't have the slight snap when your teeth hit the caramel. This was still a very good snack, but it wasn't anywhere near the standout that Shearer's version was. Lots of people could probably eat a whole bag of these in one sitting, but the texture and overall experience just didn't measure up to the the very high standards of Shearer's.
