Solo S'more Stuff Toasted Marshmallow Spread

Buy snacks at Amazon.com

Taste: This package looked like an oversized YoCrunch yogurt container, with a main tub containing marshmallow spread (where the yogurt would be in YoCrunch) and a cap that doubled as an inverted container holding "Chocolatey Graham Gems" (where the YoCrunch mix-ins would be).

I didn't realize until I read the container that the recipe called for a third ingredient that was not included — graham crackers — and that's not something I normally stock in my kitchen. The reason for reading the container was that I had a chocolate craving and intended to eat this stuff, so I decided to forge ahead without the graham crackers.

I pulled off the cap to discover that the marshmallow was beige in color. This was unexpected, since uncooked marshmallow is never beige, and furthermore, the illustration on the package showed white marshmallow in the s'more. The Chocolatey Graham Gems turned out to be quite good on their own, so I had a few handfuls of them. When I finally got around to buying some Market Basket Graham Crackers, I followed the S'more Stuff directions, making two sandwiches with the spread and chocolate pieces inside. I microwaved one of them and had the other one plain. The directions suggested 5 seconds in the microwave, but that proved quite inadequate to melt the chocolate, and I ended up doing it for 15 seconds, which warmed the marshmallow spread but just slightly melted the chocolate.

I thought the taste was OK but odd. I guess the reason for the beige color of the marshmallow spread and whatever flavor they added to it was that it was supposed to be toasted marshmallow. But it didn't taste toasted and it threw off the taste, so I didn't think that these tasted much like real s'mores, since this new flavor was substituted for the usual marshmallow. They were OK, but it seemed like a lot of work for a low-quality s'more. If you're going to bother, it's really not that hard to get the real s'mores ingredients (chocolate, graham crackers and marshmallows) and microwave those, which will get you closer to the real s'mores taste than the simulated toasted marshmallow that this spread attempted.
